Video interviews are an increasingly popular tool in recruitment because of their ability to save time and money involved in face to face interviews; remove geographic constraints; automate candidate screening. It’s simply an advancement of technology.

What is to be considered during the preparation of a video interview?

1. Check your tech

• Check your Internet speed, If your Internet connection is not stable, consider a quiet setting, where you can interview in a private room with stable Wi-Fi.

• Make sure your device (computer, tablet, or phone) is fully charged. Or, plug it into an outlet, to avoid a battery breakdown.

• Check the audio. You may need to wear headphones if your computer has a lousy speaker system, or buy an external microphone.

• Check the camera.

• Familiarize yourself with the video platform.

2. Choose the right setting

Among the most important things in a video interview tips is the proper environment. Find a quiet, private, and a place with sufficient light to do the interview, making sure to avoid coffee shops and places where you can’t control the background noise.

Lighting is also important, If a window is behind you, it could cast a shadow over your face and make it difficult for the interviewer to see you. Generally, your best strategy is to sit opposite an open window.

3. Dress the part

Although you’re not going into an office to meet with the interviewer face to face, you still need to dress appropriately for a video interview. Generally, you have to wear the same professional clothes that you’d wear to a face to face interview at the company. Don’t wear stripes they can be distracting on camera rather you should wear solid coloured shirts.

4. Don’t rely on notes

It’s smart to have a copy of your resume nearby, just as you would during a face to face interview, but don’t be tempted to have notes in your lap, such as a list of answers to common interview questions. You might lose concentration of the interview. Be prepared enough and have a lot of practice before the interview to not need any notes.

5. Make a great first impression

 It’s time to focus on what you’re going to say to win over a potential employer. Be confident while speaking, smile and engage the interviewer in conversation this will show the interviewer that you are interested in the job.

6. Mind your body language

Maintaining good eye contact is very important during any job interview, but it’s most important during video interviews. Your camera should be at eye level. It won't make a good impression if you are seen as looking down or looking up when speaking,”

Don’t forget to nod and smile when it’s appropriate. You should not sit rigidly, locked into place, without moving it might give the interviewer an impression that you are not confident.
